Dan Wetherell is named president of RATCLIFF and Christopher P. Ratcliff is now chairman of the board, April 2015

The board of directors of The Ratcliff Architects, a California Corporation (RATCLIFF) has named Dan Wetherell, AIA, president, succeeding Christopher P. “Kit” Ratcliff, FAIA, who will now serve as chairman of the board.  Ratcliff, 71, is the third generation leader of the region’s longest established architecture firm, founded by his grandfather Walter Ratcliff in 1906 and incorporated in 1961.  The award-winning firm (ratcliffarch.com) based in Emeryville, CA provides architecture, interior design and planning services to healthcare, academic and civic clients throughout the Western United States.

Wetherell, 56, is the fifth person to serve as president since incorporation, following Kit Ratcliff, Peter Scott, Burns Cadwalader and Robert Ratcliff—Walter’s son and Kit’s father.  He received both a Master’s degree in Architecture (1984) and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design (1982) from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a registered architect in California.

“Dan has been an integral part of the firm for nearly 30 years,” said Ratcliff.  “He embodies our culture, our quest to discover the important design issues and our commitment to fulfill our clients’ pragmatic and humanizing aspirations.  I know that as president his very high standards of design excellence will result in extraordinary outcomes for all of our projects.”  Wetherell directs the firm’s K-12 academic practice, leading clients from master planning and programming through design, construction and post occupancy.

Long-standing clientele have worked with Wetherell over the decades as their campuses grew and changed to reflect evolving school missions and teaching philosophies.  They include The Athenian School in Danville, CA, Head Royce School in Oakland, CA, Blue Oak School in Napa, CA, Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, CA, De La Salle High School in Walnut Creek, CA, and The Seven Hills School, also in Walnut Creek.  Wetherell also participates in the firm’s higher education, healthcare, civic and faith-based practice areas with clients including the Universities of California and Oregon, the Veterans Administration, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and First Congregational Church of Berkeley, CA.

“I look forward to carrying on the RATCLIFF firm culture that has served us well, while moving the company in new directions to adapt to changes in the profession,” Wetherell said.
