Adjoining the existing LDRS and C-section suites, this department, part of a 400,000 s.f. expansion project the firm is undertaking for John Muir Health, is designed to double ante-partum, post-partum, newborn nursery, intensive care nursery and pediatrics capacity. The old and new departments are connected by a corridor which circles a rooftop garden, accessible only to the Birth Center. Progressive elements of the ICU include all private rooms for infants in intensive care, family lounges and sibling play areas, and adjacent garden, all designed to enhance parent-baby bonding. The unit is designed with close attention to acoustics, lighting and finishes, to protect the infants and provide for optimum growth and healing. The pediatric unit incorporates all private rooms, with parent sleep space and with some rooms sized to accommodate siblings.
A pediatric playroom is located adjacent to an accessible pediatrics-only roof garden. Some of the all-private post-partum rooms are designed to be flexible in their use from post-partum to ante-partum. Many references to nature and the outdoors are incorporated to enhance the healing environment.
