Kaiser Foundation Health Plan: East Bay Service Area ED Expansion and Phase II
Walnut Creek, CA

The new ED provides Contra Costa County’s only permanent mass decontamination site and includes additional safety features, such as security-supervised entry and registration processes and an isolation treatment room with direct access from the ambulance loading area. The department is designed to serve a projected volume of 70,000 patients per year through several innovative features such as flow-through triage stations where staff can direct patients from registration/waiting directly to imaging, lab or exam rooms as required and the arrangement of treatment areas into 3 pods of exam rooms and nursing stations which can be activated or deactivated as needed The department can also operate one of the pods as a defined observation unit for holding patients until diagnosis is confirmed or inpatient beds become available.

Previously, RATCLIFF carried the design of the 140,000 s.f. hospital at Kaiser Permanente’s Walnut Creek Medical Center through OSHPD review and construction administration. The design solution (initiated by another firm) links the south and central wings of the medical center and provides 42 additional beds with nine operating suites, as well as recovery and ancillary support spaces. A new facade/entry featuring a courtyard, including a heritage oak tree, and 3-story sky lit atrium redefines the medical center’s visual presence within the community. Regional population growth necessitated the relocation and expansion of the 32,000 s.f. emergency department in former administrative space at the medical center.
