Alameda Hospital’s new cafeteria—formerly a back-of-house storage space—creates a much-needed destination for staff, patients, and visitors alike. Consisting of a full-service kitchen, servery, dining room, cafe, dietician’s office, restrooms, and staff locker room, the space is conveniently located adjacent to the passenger elevators. The cafe is a testament to what can be discovered during demolition, when previously confined space can be redesigned to provide more usable square footage. The cafe’s gallery-shaped foyer includes bench seating and wayfinding that leads to the servery and dining room beyond. With ample views and daylight, visitors can reenergize in an open layout clad in neutral and calming colors inspired by the surrounding landscape. The project also included the relocation of an occupational therapy suite and the environmental services department, which allowed for better program allocation throughout the hospital.
