Ratcliff designed and orchestrated the conversion of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit into a Pediatric Medical Surgery Unit for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. The design concept implements UCSF Interior Design Guidelines for continuity in ongoing facility renovations. Using The Museum of Oakland as the prescribed community-based reference, we introduced a visual vocabulary and thematic narrative that enhances patient & staff amenities for well-being, one that reduces stress and maximizes patient comfort & safety. The approach focuses on designing for a diverse patient population with tangible and familiar elements that are kid-friendly and easy to interpret both visually and culturally.
Colorful and joyful imagery used in the flooring, walls, and furniture are expressed as paint swatches & splotches for wayfinding, and oversized graphic art accent walls create an engaging, playful environment.
