Inspired by both the historical significance of its campus and the sustainability goals for Alameda County, Ratcliff teamed with Clark Design/Build of California, Smith Group and Shah Kawasaki to redevelop Highland Hospital to better serve the community far into the future. The 315,000 s.f Acute Care Replacement Tower for the Alameda County Highland Hospital is a nine-story, 160-bed facility designed to meet current seismic standards of SB 1953 and SB 306. The design reestablishes the central quadrangle green space from the historic Highland Hospital Campus and will maximize the original historic plan in a contemporary way by incorporating salvaged historical terracotta building elements reconstructed in the landscape. New public spaces will incorporate artifacts, drawings and historic documents. Sustainability (LEED® Gold) is also a major requirement and the teams incorporation of sustainable features is evident and celebrated in important architectural elements. In addition to a replacement patient tower and associated new Central Utility Plan, a 80,000 s.f. Satellite building (ambulatory care clinic and associated underground parking) and mixed-use link, connecting the clinic areas to the patient tower, is part of the overall replanning of the urban hospital campus. Highland Hospital is a Level 2 Trauma Center and in order to relieve the ED, an urgent care clinic will also be part of the Satellite Building program to serve approximately 35,000 patients annually. Highland Hospital is a nationally recognized teaching hospital that has been training outstanding physicians since it opened in 1927. Affiliated with the UCSF Medical Center and UOP, programs offered include: Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Internal Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.*Executive Architect: SmithGroup JJR
