Ratcliff provided full architectural services to functionally re-design the largest single building on the UC Berkeley campus. The design solution opened up the center of the building with a three-story circular stair and a new skylit atrium lobby. In addition, an infilled courtyard provides space for public gatherings. With a construction cost of over $55 million, the scope involved new construction of interior spaces totaling 340,000 s.f., and the addition of 60,000 s.f. for an expanded Biosciences Library. The exterior of the building was retained and historically preserved to maintain the structure’s landmark status.
