Ratcliff was commissioned to design a new competition level gymnasium for an existing K-8 campus in San Mateo. The gymnasium is capable of hosting up to 4 half-court basketball games or 2 concurrent volleyball games through the use of a divider curtain. The program also includes an adjoining classroom for after school programs and daily classrooms needs, along with office and support space. The design celebrates a connection between the interior and exterior through the use of expansive glazing and operable aluminum and glass “garage doors” that open onto a new campus entry quad. The quad straddles the main campus promenade, and serves as space for extracurricular school and outdoor events.Slated for completion in 2014, the new gymnasium will enhance the school’s overall presence in the community, and provide students with a permanent home for their athletic events.
